EMSE 201 – Introduction to Materials Science & Engineering Fall 2010 Department of Materials Science & Engineering 1 of 3 Case Western Reserve University EMSE 201 — Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering Stuff to know for Test 1 (Updates for fall 2009 in red .) For Test 1, a well-prepared student would know and understand the information from the overheads and text sections listed below. Overheads: The Materials Tetrahedron C&R, Chapter 1: §1.1-1.6 Understand the terms processing , structure , properties , and performance in the context of materials science and engineering. C&R Chapter 2; §4.1-4. These sections review concepts that were covered in CHEM 111 and ENGR 145. This material will therefore be presumed to be familiar to you. Overheads: Introduction to Crystallography; Principles of Atomic Packing; Polyatomic Crystal Structures Chapter 3: §3.1-3. 19 , except §3.8 and §3.15 Eqs. 3.1 & 3.3 (atomic radius-lattice parameter relationships for FCC and BCC metals) Eq. 3.2 (definition of atomic packing factor) Eq. 3.5, 3.6, 5.2, and 5.5 (density-volume-mass relationships) Table 3.6 (crystal systems). Also be able to identify the Bravais lattice of a given structure (overheads pp. 4.5-4.6). The volume of a cubic cell is a 3 , of a tetragonal cell is a 2 c , of an orthorhombic cell is abc . Indices of directions and Miller indices of planes, including Miller-Bravais indices (overheads pp. 4.12-4.13). Be able to recognize and sketch planes (including atomic positions) and directions in the various crystal structures covered. Equivalent planes and directions; families of planes and directions (overheads pp. 4.14-4.15).
