Timothy Nguyen Mr. Stringer English 1301 October 23, 2011 My Evolution of Soccer Playing the piano was my life throughout junior high. It took me years to realize that playing an instrument wasn’t really my passion. I felt like something was missing in my life. Therefore, I pleaded with my parents to let me quit because I didn’t want to waste anymore time. It was not long until my grandpa took my sister to register for soccer at our church camp. Noticing myself as inexperienced in any type of sports, I decided that maybe I should try something new for once. Therefore, both of us registered to start playing soccer. The moment I stepped onto the field with my brand new soccer gear, I knew I was ready to play. Although I struggled at first, the soccer discourse community showed me a new world of which I was now a part. I was allowed to let go of everything and take out any stress I had on the soccer field. I was instantly dedicated to the sport and met many new people who have been in my life throughout the years. Before actually being admitted into this discourse community, I needed to learn about the rules and regulations of the game. Free kicks, penalty kicks, red cards, yellow cards, off sides, and fouls are just a few terms that I that learned and mastered in order to be successful on the field. According to the official soccer referee handbook, I learned that a “free kick” is a placed kick that is allowed for a foul or infringement by the other team that can be taken from where the offence took place. This type of kick can happen anywhere on the pitch unless it was a penalty. Whereas, the term “penalty kick” is a situation in which a player is allowed to take a “free shot”
