INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY STUDY GUIDE FOR EXAM 2 Dr. King / Spring 2011 Exam 2 will be given in class on Thursday, February 24 . Like Exam 1, it will consist of short identifications (people, terms, concepts), multiple choice questions, and questions about the Culture Sketches . You will have 1 hour to complete it, though it may not take you that long. The exam will cover all the material we have covered SINCE the first exam. That means the chapters on language and culture (4), learning one’s culture (5), making a living (6), and economic systems (7) in the Bonvillain book and Chapters 3 (Basseri) and 6 (Ju/'hoansi) in Peters-Golden. It also includes any additional material presented in class. I have organized the guide so that under each concept are the key components of that concept. Terms you should be able to identify are included as before. I suggest you start by learning the terms and the concepts behind them, then work on the specific items listed under the guide. If you really understand the terms, you should be able to apply them in the exam. Chapter 4: Language and Culture o Know the definition and properties of language (symbolism/arbitrary), duality of patterning/discrete, productivity, displacement) how is human language different from animal signals and call systems? o Know about the relationship of language to culture o Know what the subfields of linguistics are (descriptive, historical, ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics) and what they study o Know the components of language (phonemes/phonetics/ phonology, morphemes/morphology, lexicon, syntax, grammar) what is the relationship of language to worldview?
