3 NAME: ______________________ 2. Intestinal epithelial cells are polarized cells that have many microvilli on the surface bordering the lumen of the intestine. Tight junctions between these cells provide an effective barrier preventing solutes from diffusing between the intestinal lumen and the extracellular matrix at the basal lateral sides of the cells. A diagram of two of these cells is shown below. The concentration of glucose in the lumen of the intestine is lower than the concentration of glucose in the intestinal epithelial cells. Glucose is pumped from the lumen into the epithelial cells by a Na + glucose symport protein localized only in the microvillar membrane. Glucose passes out of the cell on the basolateral side of the membrane by passive transport using a glucose carrier protein localized in the basolateral domain of the membrane. Na + K + ATPase is also localized only in the basolateral domain of the plasma membrane of these cells as shown in the diagram below.
