Midterm 3 Class Notes 1 A. Behaviorists and Learning. a. Black Box theory: you can observe the environment and the behavior a.i. The black box is you, or the individual in question. You don’t have to go into the black box, you can move around it. a.ii. When something causes something to happen, you can just look at the end result. b. Karl Hempel: explanation is a prediction that you could have made. An explanation that occurs after an event has happened, could have really been predicted before the event took place. c. If you can predict behavior, you can change behavior, thus you can change it by changing the environment. d. For 40 years it was all about environment and behavior, boring. B. Pavlov: studying digestion in stomach a. Saliva is different depending on what food you are going to eat. b. In his experiment, he measured how much a dog was salivating while eating certain foods, and noticed how when he would go for a cabinet, the dog would salivate a lot. c. Classical Conditioning: very controlled stimuli, 3 steps, always about a new stimulus eliciting an old response: c.i. Unconditional Stimulus
