Psych Lecture Midterm 3 Freud I. Medical Students Disease: they read something about some kind of ailment and they think it happens to them. a. Neurosis: an exaggeration of everyday behaviors, phobias so that it is interfering with your life. b. Psychosis: a disconnection with reality, dillusions, beliefs that are contrary to fact: you think that you are batman. c. Freud was interested in Neurosis. d. Time period: late 1880’s e. Initially a neurologists. f. Darwin said that reproduction was key in surviving, and Freud was saying that the most important factor in the end of the day is reproduction and human sexuality in relation to psychology. g. Wrote book: Project for a Scientific Psychology. h. The biology was not advanced enough in his day, so he puts the biology portion out of the way, and creates a psychology completely removed from biology. i. Went to Paris working at hospital, Charcot was the head honch there. i.i. In 1770’s , Mesmer was totally into magnets, had fancy hot tubs. The hot tub was magnetized. People reported feeling better after being in the tub. His tub was proved wrong by taking out the magnets and the people still felt better. i.ii.
