Psych 201 Lec. 3 1. Correlation a. A relationship between two different things, usually numerically. b. Scatter Plot, one variable per axis. c. Positive Corr.: as one var. increases so does the other., perfect ratio would be r=1.0 d. R^2= percenage of variation accounted for. e. A correlation allows you to make a guess that is going to be more precise than just citing the average. f. Perfect correlation would mean that all points lie on the best fit line. g. Correlatoin of r=0 tells you that the two variables are not related at all h. Negative Corr: as one variable goes up, the other goes down. 2. Causation a. We want causation, it helps to cause change. b. Correlation is not causation! c. The directionality problem, when you have a correlation, you don’t know whether A B or B A c.i. Does spanking cause aggression or does aggression cause spanking? d. Third factor: poverty aggression or poverty spanking e. In order to say that causation is related to correlation, you have to deal with both the Third Factor and Directionality Problems. f.
