Dominic Sween BRAE 128 11/07/11 BRAE 128 Field Trip In the early hours of the morning on Monday, October 31, we all prepared to board the charter bus for the daylong field trip. The purpose of this field trip was to become familiarized with different careers that are available to BRAE and ASM students. Throughout the day we visited several facilities that ranged from shingle plants to citrus processing facilities. The first stop of the morning was to the construction site for the Highway 48 Widening Project. Jeff McGuire, the project manager and estimator, greeted us when we arrived. Jeff is a former Cal Poly BRAE graduate who currently works for Papich Construction. Papich Construction is a smaller construction company that is growing very rapidly. They currently own more equipment than any of the local equipment rental facilities. There is a great need for this volume of equipment for this highway project. The highway is currently a two-lane, low shoulder passageway. Jeff said that the bridge is a 1000ft. long, rockskirter bridge that uses 11,000 cyd. of concrete. There is a wide range of re-bar that they are using to reinforce all of the concrete throughout the bridge. They have had to move a large amount of dirt in this process as well. As of now, they have moved over 1.9 million cubic feet of dirt. There will be a total of 130,000 tons of asphalt that will be laid over this process. In essence, this is a $47,000,000 construction job. In a construction job of this size in California, there are many environmental and state standards that have to be recognized and handled appropriately. Jeff told us that he really enjoys his work because it allows him to be outside and being active in his work. He did make us aware that the construction business is not easy due to the long hours and immense responsibility. One of the perks of his position is that he can set his own hours and be his own boss. In closing, Jeff made it clear to us that it is extremely important to
