Roman Ferro BRAE 331 PS#8 Salinity and Irr. Efficiency Problem Set - Due Monday, March 7 Total points = 16 1. What is the one irrigation management factor that will most affect the value of the average ECe in the root zone? Assume you cannot change the irrigation water quality, as a management option. Assume sprinkler irrigation on a field crop. The amount of deep percolation. In order to leach salts out of the soil, excessive amounts of water is applied to the soil. This is seen in reclamation leaching. 2.(2) Define LR & LF (see the Efficiency paper for part of this) – word for word. Then draw a sketch that clearly shows the LF and LR segments of irrigation water for a condition where the net needed is supplied over 7/8ths of the field. Assume no surface losses. On the sketch, show the SMD line also. Label axis on the water destination diagram. Leaching Requirement- the extra percentage of water that must infiltrate into the soil beyond the amount needed for meeting the evapotranspiration needs, non-uniformity, and non-infiltrated losses. Leaching Fraction- the fraction of water that is being used for leaching. 3. List 3 practices used to minimize salt damage to plants during germination. Shaping the seed beds to minimize the salt concentration around the seed.
