Unformatted text preview: STAT 8200 Design of Experiments for Research Workers Lab 4 Due: Tuesday, October 19 Example: Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is an automobile emission pollutant, but less is known about its effects than other pollutants such as particulate matter. Several animal models have been studied to gain an understanding of the effects of NO 2 . Sherwin and Layfield (1976) studied protein leakage in the lungs of mice exposed to 0.5 parts per million (ppm) NO 2 for 10, 12 and 14 days. Half of a total group of 44 animals was exposed to the NO 2 ; the other half served as controls. Because of some loss of data, only 38 animals were available for analysis. The data appear below. Serum Fluorescence Group 10 Days 12 Days 14 Days Control 143 179 76 169 160 40 95 87 119 111 115 72 132 171 163 150 146 78 141 Exposed 152 141 119 83 132 104 91 201 125 86 242 147 150 209 200 108 114 178 75 We will ignore the last observation at 10 days in both the control and exposed group so that we can pretend that this is a balanced data set. With these data it would be interesting to know the answers to the following questions: 1. Does NO 2 exposure affect protein leakage?...
