The Substance of History Duncan was young, and his 6 year reign 1034-40 was torn by many military defeats against Vikings. Little general regret when he was murdered by Macbeth and other nobles. The Substance of History Lady Macbeth = Gruoch , daughter of a son of Kenneth III (King of Scotland) who had been killed by Malcolm II (King and Duncan’s Grandfather) in order to ensure Duncan’s succession. Macbeth reigned 17 years, from 1040- 1057. “Macbeth, if a murder, was a good king.” When the Stuart family came to power, Banquo and Fleance were invented.
