Optional Paper Topics for Shakespeare: King Lear , Macbeth , and Antony and Cleopatra Due April 21 NOTE ON GRADING: The paper is worth 20% of your grade, and it can only improve your final grade. Any paper that considers the current live performance of Macbeth at Theater for a New Audience will receive an additional 10 points. Here is a set of topics for your essay. Your paper should have a strong thesis, a title, and should be 4 pages long (double-spaced). Try making profitable of some of the following research tools: Resources: 1. Primary sources such as the Bible, or in our handouts, or, from texts at the library or on library databases. You may also wish to consult G. Bullough, Narrative and Dramatic Sources of Shakespeare and other excellent source books that I have put on reserve in Alexander Library. 2. The Oxford English Dictionary (on- or offline) or concordances. The best Shakespeare concordance is the Harvard Concordance to Shakespeare . Concordances for major authors (or the Bible) can be located in the library simply by doing a “Keyword” search such as “Concordance and Shakespeare.” 3. A live or filmed performance. Some Topics: Remember: These topics are meant to stimulate a good thesis argument – you do not need to think of answering each of the questions they raise. 1. Oppositions in King Lear : Lear undertakes a detailed exploration of some key opposites: sight versus blindness, wisdom versus folly, nature versus culture (or civilization). Take up any ONE of these sets of oppositions, and write an essay discussing their significance in the play. Is Lear
