The students will be acquainted with the historical background and specific circumstances of the movement’s inception and growth. Zionism will be examined as a case study of an idea and ideology, or the interplay between a vision and the attempts to realize it. The course will identify an analyze debates, controversies and interpretations which have dialectically and exuberantly abetted and stalled Zionism since its creation. Required Text Book The following book is required for purchase at the Rutgers University Bookstore: Shimoni Gideon: The Zionist Ideology , Brandeis University Press, 1997 (Paperback) Course Requirements Class participation is obligatory and students are required to prepare the course readings. All of the assigned readings, except for the required book, have been put on the Sakai website
