Emily Butler Section T2 November 15, 2010 “Avatar” Everybody was thrilled when the movie Avatar came out. Many people described it as something they had never seen before. The art and the graphics were outstanding, and it seemed to have a really great plot. The movie is about a white man, Jake, who is a former marine, who goes into the world called “Pandora” where the native people live. He was given a mission from the military to become one with the native peoples, learn their ways, and eventually take over their land so they could get the resource they want. When Jake is there he ends up falling in love with one of the native women who happens to be the ruler’s daughter. However, this film has some underlying meanings that could be very offensive to some people. Not many people notice that this film has a trope of the “noble savage” to help their plot be more convincing. The native peoples are depicted as almost barbaric. They are completely different than us down to their image. Their skin color is blue and they have stripes similar to a tiger. They have long hair that almost looks like dread locks, and wear very little clothing.
