Case 7-3: Silvio Napoli at Schindler India (A) Schindler’s India Explorations First elevator in India was installed in 1925 but had its first local distributor only in the 1950s The Growing Commitment Established in 1874 in Switzerland by Robert Schindler, the company began manufacturing elevators in 1889 Alfred N. Schindler, in 1987, sought to transform the company’s culture from that of an engineering-based manufacturing company to one of a customer-oriented service company By 1998, Schindler was widely perceived as the technology leader in elevators and the nr 1 producer of escalators In 1985: entered into a technical collaboration with Mumbai-based Bharat Bijlee Ltd. To manufacture, market, and sell its elevators In late 1996, collaboration with BBL ended, and Schindler began considering options to establish its own operations in India Silvio Napoli’s Role Joined Schindler in 1994 The Swatch Project Project’s goal was to develop a standardized elevator at a dramatically lower cost than the existing broad line of more customized products The Indian Entry Project Negotiations with BBL broke down and Schindler engaged the BCG to identify and evaluate alternative local partners with whom Schindler might build its business in India -> concluded there was no ideal partner Napoli was offered the job of creating the Indian subsidiary Forming Schindler India In the team forming process, the different management styles and personal characteristics of Schindler India’s new leaders became clear:
