Philosophy Notes 10-14-09 Page 1 Descartes was motivated to know what is true (or real) First Meditation (pg.12): It’s not only these few ideas that may be wrong, but it’s also everything I have built upon them The goal of demolishing all of his beliefs was to start over with true/real beliefs this time, and to establish something in the sciences that will last All of these “sciences” are subject to doubt EXCEPT mathematics which was certain and exact, but in 1st meditation he says needs more work 1 Old Science “pre-modern”: Aristotle Based on our perception of the world Everything is made of combination of 4 elements (earth, air, fire, water) 4 elements = terrestrial Terrestrial vs. Heavens The earth is not moving and it’s also the center of the cosmos Why does the chalk go down? “like attracts like”. ..it’s made of earthly things and it desires to go to the earth When you strike a match, the flame goes up so it must be attracted to something fiery, just like the chalk is attracted to the
