Introduction • Adherence – degree to which behavior coincides with prescribed behavior • Compliance 4 • Two forms – Behavioral – Medical • Continuum of adherence Causes • Demographic variables –Age , Race, Sex, Occupation, Education, Health literacy – Functional health literac 5 Functional health literacy – Rarely assessed by health care providers – Take 1 tablet every 6 h as needed. Take one at 7 AM, when can you take the next tablet? Causes • Medical variables – Type of disease, severity and duration of disease, number of co-morbid conditions, frequency of use of medical services, 6 patient satisfaction with care, quality of care – Chronic illness – Role of Depression
