Chapter 11 Q UIN 1 Living With Chronic Illness Objectives • Predict the initial response of individuals diagnosed with a chronic illness Evaluate the role of caregivers in the 2 • Evaluate the role of caregivers in the treatment of chronic illness • Predict the response of individuals to issues related to death and dying • Changes in causes of death over the past 100 years – Infectious diseases are down Chronic diseases are up Introduction 3 – Chronic diseases are up • Not only live longer, but also know what you will die of 5 years or longer before the event Introduction • Definition of chronic disease: – Any illness that persists for a long time and is either incurable, or results in pathological changes that limit a person’s 4 ability to function in a normal manner on a daily basis • Not all are life threatening – Control main symptoms – Control for many years without cure Introduction • In all cases, a chronic disease has the potential to force a profound change in lifestyle and quality of life Will also impact on person’s sense of 5 • Will also impact on person s sense of self, and not simply quality of life Quality of Life • Not typically considered important • Advances in technology • Types 6 – Physical function – Psychological status – Social functioning – Disease- or Treatment-related symptoms
