Somatoform and Dissociative Disorders Q UIN 1 Chapter 6 Learning Objectives Somatoform disorders Be able to describe and distinguish between: hypochondriasis, conversion disorder, malingering and factitious disorders 2 Dissociative disorders Be able to describe and distinguish between: depersonalization, dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, dissociative trance, and dissociative identity disorders Somatoform Disorders • Overly preoccupied with health or body appearance • Physical complaints without a medical condition 3 • Pathologically concerned with the appearance and function of their body Hypochondriasis • Physical complaints without a clear cause • Severe anxiety about having a serious disease 4 – Preoccupied with bodily symptoms and misinterprets them as signs of illness • Reassurance from physicians is only effective in the short-term Hypochondriasis • Causes – Cognitive perceptual distortions – Familial history of illness Tt 5 • Treatment – Challenge illness-related misinterpretations – Provide more substantial and sensitive reassurance Hypochondriasis 6
