M E M O R A N D U M TO: W. Lynn Beason, Ph.D., P.E. Instructor CVEN 489, Spring 2010 FROM: Garrett Lucas 317009025 DATE: 2/12/10 RE: Lab 2 During this lab, historic gas prices and gas production rates were found and compared to determine whether gas prices were comparable to the rate of production during the winter and summer seasons. The data was taken from the months of January and June during the years 1976 to 2008. I recovered the data for the average gas prices from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website ( http://www.bls.gov/ ) and the data for the productions rates were found at the website for the Energy Information Administration ( http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/mer/contents.html ). Looking at the data presented in the graph in Figure 1 Appendix A, it is obvious that since 1976 gas prices have risen following closely to an exponential pattern. Since the year 2001, the prices have increased higher than any prior. As a majority, the price of gas has been higher in June than in January. While on the contrary, as presented by Figure 2 of Appendix A shows an overall rise in the rate of gas production during the time period. The graph tends to display values high in June than in January. This shows the a relationship to Figure 1, following same pattern. When comparing the two graphs (Fig. 1 and 2), they show a direct relationship that the two are related in some way or form. The price for gas may have risen because of the economies demand, yet the demand of gas in not directly related to the price of gas because the higher the price does not always mean that oil was produced at a high volume that year.
