Unformatted text preview: Cooperative learning has a variety of benefits to the classroom. From a multicultural perspective, these groups are usually positive. Many culturally diverse students are brought up in communities that teach and value group work. By bringing these experiences into the classroom, teachers give those brought up in such communities academic advantages that they would not have in individualistic learning scenarios. Group learning also reinforces self concept for those who are habitually used to learning in this manner. Research on group education has exemplified other benefits, such as improved problem solving, increased retention of knowledge and positive attitudes towards learning and different races for many students. Obviously a curriculum solely centered on group learning would become mundane and ineffective. Group learning has its advantages up to a certain point. Other students may prefer competitive learning scenarios. Well known to the American education system, individual learning is a prominent conception of education. Some of the arguments for competitive learning situations are that it reflects our capitalistic society, develops leadership skills (often at the expense of others), and prepares students for a competitive and tough life.
