Question 2: 1. How did Dziga Vertov view the traditional fiction film, such as those imported from the American or Germany film industries, for instance? Vertov didn't like the German or American fiction films, hated the fact that they were so fake. Cinema was diseased and dying as a result of the influx of foreign films. Hollywood went against everything he believed in. Since Vertov is a Russian who pioneers in Russian documentary film, he is pro “non- fiction” and he thinks that the traditional fiction film is too dramatic. He considers them “opium for the masses.” 2. How did he see the role of film for society, and through what methods did he attempt to express his views in addition to his filmed work? Include information on Kino-Pravda, Council of Three, and what the Cinema-Eyes or Kinoki wished to emphasize. “The task of Soviet films, as Vertov saw it, was to document socialist reality.” Vertov is passionate about “film truth”— presenting reality / truth through film to audience. He also likes to put fragments of actuality together, and present a “deeper” truth that cannot
