Jordan Strassner Anthro 2 Movie Notes 10/14/11 Oil is the lifeline of the global economy Oil production has exceeded oil discovery Oil production is constantly increasing Peak oil – the time when the world’s rate of oil production starts to decline The rate of extraction of oil will decrease The United States reached its peak of oil production in the 1970s and has been declining ever since Prices are sure to go up when the world reaches the peak of oil production Food and energy have always been very closely related If oil prices were to dramatically rise, there would be broad impacts on agriculture industry As cost of petroleum fuels rise, the competition between crops will rise It takes more energy to produce ethanol than the amount of energy ethanol contains A century ago, half of Americans were farmers o That number is now less than 1% of Americans When prices rise, it is rare to see wages increase because of the shortage of energy
