Notes 10/10/11 Evolution: Biology, Society, and Culture Evolution: Change o First meant – maturation of an individual o Later meant – process of natural historical development across generations Biology – Darwin o Natural selection: the mechanism of evolution o “Evolution by variation and selective and retention” Struggle for existence – all in competition for survive Differential fitness – have different skills, skill levels Variety inherited – Species vary based on inherited qualities throughout generations o No foresight to evolution: no necessary destination Peter and Rosemary Grant – studied finches in Galapagos after Darwin o Changes in environmental conditions o Finches with long strong beaks were best able to survive drought conditions o Population shift during a drought Sickle Cell o Two HbA (homozygous) = normal hemoglobin o Two HbS = lethal sickle cell anemia o One of each (heterozygous) = nonlethal sickle-cell syndrome Resistant to malaria
