Notes 10/12/11 Environment and Society The Nuer – E.E. Evans-Pritchard (1940) o Environment > Livelihood > Society/Culture o Grasslands > Cattle > Social and Political Organization (segmentary) “Nuer tends to define all social processes and relationships in terms of cattle. Their social idiom is a bovine idiom.” Environment o Flat lands with clay soils o Flooding / drought o Agriculture unreliable o Grasslands o Rainy/dry seasons “…an environmental system which directly conditions Nuer life and influence their social structure.” Production o Cattle must be kept in dry areas o Some agriculture in high areas o Fishing in low areas o Transhumance – reflection of necessary migrations during wet and dry seasons Environment / Society / Culture o Sparse settlements, small, separate political groups: segmentation o Concentrate during rainy months, disperse during the dry months o Tribal identities over larger areas Agricultural Involution - Clifford Geertz (1963)
