Notes 11/7/11 Political Organization Band, Tribe, Chiefdoms, States o “Types” described by Elman Service Abstract categories All exist today within nation-states Bands o Small (20-50) groups that forage o Egalitarian o Little differentiation of wealth, prestige, power o Exogamous, bilateral kinship o Membership is flexible o No warfare Tribes o Bigger than bands o Horticultural cultivation, pastoralism o Egalitarian (gender stratification) o Kin-based groups (common ancestor) – “contingent alliance networks” o Warfare o Leadership: village head; “big man” Max Gluckman – The Peace in the Feud o The Nuer: Tribe “They are our enemies; we marry them” Exogamy produces allegiances Peace is not in the absence of conflict, but rather the organization of conflict o Ecological need to cooperate o Segments of the tribe related through ancestors: kinship o Fusion and fission in conflict o Vengeance groups are agnatic (male) kin Scattered widely, feuding people live together
