1 III. TYPES OF BUDDHISM A. THEREVADA BUDDHISM “PATH OF THE ELDERS” (MONKS) The way of the monk. This is the brunch of the Buddhism that has been trying to be strict to the original teachings. 1. ASOKA 273 BCE - a emperor of India. He ended up becoming a Buddhist and promoted Buddhism in India. He reformed and send missionaries. 2. SRI LANKA ISLAND a. MAHINDA 250 BCE – he ended up going somewhere and promoted Buddhism. the oldest text comes from samghmitta. b. BUDDHAGHOSA 450 CE (PALI) – a Buddhist scolders and he wrote some collection of books. The true text of Buddha is pali. And the true text is sarkist c. SAMGHAMITTA – they claim to have his old Buddha items. Teeth, tea, and etc. d. 3. COMMUNITY OF MONKS - they have become like persist where people would come to for weddings, help, past loved ones, and etc. 4. TIPITAKA (P) TRIPITAKA (S) “THREE BASKETS” VINAYA (P,S), - there are three collections of the Buddhist teachings. SUTRA (S) – the rules of the monk. –SUTTA (P) the collections of the buddha’s sayings and teachings , ABHIDHAMMA (P)
