Yoga - derives from the root: “yuj”- to yoke harness, join together.  Union of individual self with  your universal self Jiva - atman - living self Parama - atman - supreme self Samadhi - ecstasy/identification with the object of meditation such that the self disappears Guru - master/teacher Shishya - apprentice/student Kirtans - hymns of praise Siddhi - sensory powers/abnormal abilities/accomplishments Ashtanga - 8-limbed yoga 7 yoga systems in chap. 1 Bhakti Yoga - Yoga of the Heart: love + devotion for a divine object or person, 3,500 yrs old.  Goal: communion w/ or total merging w/ the divine (exp the anguish of longing for the divine)   Mantra Yoga - Yoga of Potent Sound: [dating back to the Rig Veda] mantra = spiritually charged  + powerfully mind-altering sound. Can be out loud or in your head.  A yogin would use it to  refine/expand his/her awareness Karma Yoga - Yoga of Selfless Action + Love, service to others without desire for reward.  Without the interference of the ego, action spontaneity appears as a smooth flow Jnana Yoga - Yoga of Discrimination b/t Real/Unreal: (jnana = wisdom) who am i Raja Yoga - Yoga of the Spiritual Kings: to become ruler over one’s mind, ashtanga yoga,  Samadhi, meditation Tantra Yoga - Yoga of Energy Control: (tantra = extend/stretch out) goal: realization of one Self  essence of all beings + things. Believed impulses were useful expressions of the divine in  awakening
