Magnetic Resonance Imaging was developed based on knowledge gained from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. The original name for the medical technology is Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (NMRI), but the word nuclear has since been left out to avoid the negative connotations associated with the word nuclear, and prevent patients from associating the examination with radiation exposure, which is not one of the safety concerns for MRI. Since our bodies are full of water, when we are placed in a magnetic field the magnetic diopole of the spinning protons in our water molecules will align with or oppose to the magnetic field ( α - and β -spin state - just like NMR). Recall from NMR spectroscopy, after an rf pulse the protons “flip” from α - to β -spin state (and visa versa) and are detected. Following this, these protons rapidly “relax”
