Joseph Martella CLCS 335 Lecture 21 October 26, 2010 Lecture 21: The Western Hero - heros – Greek word used for “hero” - usually divine father and mortal mother - brave, powerful, and fight monsters - Bigger, stronger, faster, fighter - strong link between hero and the community; does things for community , he is the leader - Does outrageous things that are outside of moral limits because only divine people can transgress these limits - when hero dies, he becomes daimon – person between being a human and being a god, means lesser divinity. Tomb becomes a cult center, called a heraon - Sema means tomb, built upon soma (body) - There will be games, sacrifices, races, etc. at funeral - Geras – piece of meat burnt for hero, means “prize” - Also, they pour wine/honey/water/blood into pot w/out a bottom so it goes into the ground - Mixture of chthonic and uranian sacrifices, two words for sacrifices, thyo, enagzo, depending on which way you are sacrificing (up or down), heroes get both -
