Lecture 25 – The Trojan War - For the Greeks, the Trojan War was history and was sometime around 1184 BCE (to them) - Associated with city of Mycenae - Story starts with rape of Leda by Zeus, he appears in the form of a swan. Leda was already married to Tyadoreus. She gave birth to Castor and Polydeuces (male twins) and Clytemnestra and Helen (female twins). o Helen is the outside child in this family, when it comes time for her to marry, all Greek bachelors court her o Helen and Menelaus marry. Agamemnon, Menelaus’ brother marries Clytemnestra. o Agamemnon and Menelaus are from Mycenae. - When Thetis comes to age, both Zeus and Poseidon want her. - Prophesy comes and says that Thetis will have a son that will be stronger than the father, therefore Zeus and Poseidon don’t want her, they think they need to marry her off to a mortal so it wouldn’t threaten the universe. - Thetis is married off to Peleus. o
