Lecture 28 – The Absent King - Odysseus is a trickster that doesn’t follow the heroic code - Autolycus (Odysseus’ maternal uncle) is a trickster and Heracles’ wrestling coach. He is also known for constructing oaths that he can get out of. Hermes is also known as a trickster. - There is some question of who is Odysseus’ father. Sisyphus is one of the four sinners that get punished; he has to roll boulder up hill. He is also a trickster. - Later on, Zeus rapes Arethusa, a river. Poseidon tells Arethusa’s dad to get Arethusa. Sisyphus locks death in a closet, gets in trouble. - Sisyphus tells his wife not to throw funeral rights; then tricks Hades into letting him go back up. He does and lives for a while longer but then has to push boulder forever. (Example of him being a trickster) - Odysseus has married Penelope at the start of the Trojan War, son named Telemachus. When they come to recruit him, he pretends he is crazy. Palamedes

They then party on the beach, and while they are partying the Ciconian’s call their allies and they kill many of Odysseus friends. o Lotus Eaters – causes people who eat it to forget things o Cyclops – named Polyphemus; they land on and island of a bunch of them and they are children of Poseidon. They have bad xenia, eat their guests. Odysseus offers Polyphemus some wine, and in return Polyphemus offers to eat him last. Polyphemus asks him his name and Odysseus says nobody – Otis. Odysseus then burns him in the eyes....
