Because the health care system now is in shambles. Most of our health care spending is on chronic diseases, which are preventable, like being overweight, smoking. When health care reform started, there were several different versions of the bill. To increase access, quality, cut costs. Area that she is most interested in, prevention. People are recognizing that health is more than just medical services. Megan – phd claudia – tang center. Who has the most gain, who loses? megan – about 32 million people are expected to gain health insurance. 16 mill through medicaid. In 2014, insurers will not be able to discriminate against people. Erica – people of color continue to receive worse access to health care. They represent a third of the nations population, but half of the uninsured. Claudia – who may lose is who is paying the premium – employers. Mandated to change their plans. We dont know yet what that cost factor will be. In terms of how it affects studet insurance – it is positive. SHIP. Not all college systems have an insurance requirement. The benefits
