Chapter 2 – Classical view of organizations USA Basketball – develop basketball in the US; all of USA teams’ job Attributes of an organization o Identity – makes the organization; vision, values, objectives and goals o Instrumentality – how capable the organization is to carry out set goals o Program of activity - ` o Membership – target audiences; loyalties o Clear boundaries – based on attributes; YMCA and Lifetime o Permanency o o Formal rules/procedures Mission Statement o First and foremost, the company must state why it exists o This is stated through the mission statement, which defines the fundamental purpose of an organization, succinctly describing why it exists o A mission statement provides details of what is done and answers the question: “what do we do?” Vision statement o The organization should also know where it’s going o This is stated through the vision statement, which defines the desired or intended future state of an in terms of its fundamental objective and /or strategic direction o Vision is a long term view, and is a source of inspiration o Vision provides clear decision-making criteria Goals and objectives o Goals are long-term aims at organization sets to attain
