Muscle mass is affected by:  genetics, nervous system activation, environment, endocrine/hormonal influences, nutrition, physical activity  Thanks, dad    Genetics!   Body types Mesomorph = muscular; meso (muscle) - puts on mass easily. doesn't tak much work powerlifters, sprinters, football, anybody who needs muscle Ectomorph = linear build. not skinny. shoulders to hips and feet are straight up and down. don't develop the bulk of the muscles.  Endomorph = rounded, curvy; upper or lower body. hourglass shape Most are a combination, i.e. Endo-meso Is your body type genetic?                                                               Genetic differences 1.  Musculo-skeletal structure Limb length Muscle length Muscle length/tendon attachment ratio Tendon insertion Muscle fiber type hormones Males generally have greater amount of muscle mass and thus are able to produce more force – larger cross-sectional area Most likely due to difference in the amount of testosterone Genetic differences:  4.  Age 1. ~30% decrease in muscle strength bt 20-75 yrs 2. Most strength decline after age 50 + after menopause (attenuated by estrogen replacement) 3. Most rapid decline? After 80 yrs Benefits of strength training Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes Reductions in resting bp (if high) Improved physical image, self-esteem Enhanced physical activity experiences 1
