For instance 1 centimeter (cm) is divided into ten smaller units called millimeters (mm). One decimeter is comprised of 10 cm. One meter is comprised of 100 cm. One kilometer is made up on 1,000 meters. Oftentimes, oceanic terminology uses meters such as the average depth of the ocean is about 4,000 meters. Any modern ruler in the Standard system (foot, yard etc) is also calibrated in metrics. The illustration below demonstrates this. The basic metric unit of measure on a ruler like this is the centimeter. For instance the distance from the number 20 to 21 is 1 cm. The distance from 22 to 25 is 3 cm. Your assignment is to obtain a ruler that is calibrated in metrics and measure various items. Measure the following in metrics: 1. Your hand from the palm to the tip of the longest finger. ______________ cm 2. The height of a door. _____________ m (NOTE: a door will be many centimeters in height so convert centimeters to meters.
