Page 1 of 15 Homework 2 Problem 1 Aspen HYSYS™ Ethyl Chloride Case Study 20 points possible due Friday September 9, 2011 Grader: Israel Problem Statement : In the reactor, ethyl chloride is produced by the gas phase reaction of HCl with ethylene over a copper chloride catalyst supported on silica: 24 25 CH HC l CHC l  The feed stream to a process is composed of 50% HCl, 48% C 2 H 4 , and 2% N 2 with a flowrate of 100 kmol/hr at 25°C and 1 atm. This reaction is exothermic and achieves a conversion of 90%. The ethyl chloride product is separated from unreacted reagents using a splitter and then the unreacted reagents are recycled. To prevent the accumulation of inert gases in the system, 10 kmol/hr is withdrawn in the purge stream, W. Method of Solution: Use the Recycle logical operator in HYSYS TM to feed 80% of the unreacted product back to reactor. Use the Spreadsheet logical operator to manually calculate the process conversion. Solution: 1) Open the HYSYS TM program: All Programs/AspenTech/Process Modeling V7.2/Aspen HYSYS/Aspen HYSYS 2) Open a new case by either selecting File/New/Case from the top menu bar or clicking on the icon on the tool bar. 3) The Simulation Basis Manager will appear. Click on the Fluid Pkgs tab. Click Add . Since we are dealing with a relatively ideal system and hydrocarbons, let’s select the Peng-Robinson equation of state. Click on Peng-Robinson in the Property Package Selection list.

Type “ethylene” into the Match field, be sure that you highlight the appropriate component, and then click Add Pure or press enter to add it to the Selected Components list. Add HCl and nitrogen in the same manner. It is easiest to locate C 2 H 5 Cl by checking the Full Name radio button and type ClC 2 .
