Homosexuals in the Military Homosexuals have not been accepted in our society for as long as the United States has been a country. The dislike for homosexuals is very subtle, yet the entire nation knows that they do not have equal protection under the law. Even though they are concealed, hate crimes are always happening against gays. Discrimination can be seen anywhere you go, such as in school, at the workplace, on TV, and even in the military. The military does not openly discriminate against homosexuals, but there is a policy that was created in 1993 called the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy by Bill Clinton. This policy stated that gay people are permitted to serve, but they cannot say that they are gay, and the government is not allowed to ask. If they do say that they are gay, then there is a possibility that they can be discharged. Homosexuality is not only an issue in the United States, but in other countries as well. Some countries are very accepting, and some do not tolerate it at all. Their militaries also have different policies towards whether or not gays can serve. Homosexuality is a big issue in religion as well. Despite all of the injustice towards homosexuals, there are organizations that are very accepting towards them, such as the Gay Straight Alliance Network International. GSANI is a nonprofit organization for young people and created by them. They work together as a community and strive to advance the health, education, and leadership of young gay people. GSANI is not the only famous organization for gays. There is also the Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation. Their mission is to get equal rights for gays in the media. They want gays to be represented equally as a means to eradicate homophobia. Not only are there GSANI and GLAAD, but there are countless

others, such as Queer Nation, New Gay Liberation Front, and Rainbow Law. All of these organizations strive to get a better community for homosexuals to live in. Even though America still does not completely accept homosexuals, it is slowly becoming more tolerated. In recent polls on whether homosexual relations should be made legal or not, the results were record breaking. The support for the legalization of homosexuality has risen from “43% to 59%. However, only 45% of people over the age of 55 accept homosexuality as an acceptable alternative lifestyle.” (http://www.lifesite.net/ldn/2007/may/07053003.html). Therefore, the rise in the acceptance of gays could be because younger people are more accepting than elderly people. Overall, American government accepts homosexuality if it is in private, but they do not accept open gay and lesbian lifestyles. There are many countries that fully accept homosexuality as a lifestyle.
