Norman Invasion of Ireland -took place in the 12 th century -Brian Boruwas the king at the time, the last High king of Ireland. He was killed in the battle of clontarf, and there is no clear succession to his high kingship. Power of the Church in Ireland right before the invasion was reduced and its influence abroad dramatically lessened. -Irish Christianity was under fire, so it was European Christianity vs. the irishchurch. “What was the Irish church and the Roman church like?” The 11 th and 12 th century church was very insular, and at the same time Rome was building a stronger papacy. It wants all of Christianity within its orb. -“Do you know what propaganda is?” means spreading rumors meant to harm a person, so there was a campaign of propaganda against the Irish church. They were called “ Insula barbarorum ” – The island of barbarians. -The papacy believed that there was too much wealth and too much power in the monasteries wealth was staying within the families instead of going to the church. Therefore, the Irish monasteries died out. -The Synod of Kells, in 1152, was a reformation of the church. It turned it into a
