Beth White PubHlth 160 – My Body, My Health February 18, 2011 Journal 3 – Redefining Masculinity Rape is one of those topics that tend to make people uncomfortable. However, I believe, and so does Lisa Jervis, that it needs to be de-stigmatized and society needs to stop blaming the women who are brave enough to step forward and say something. Recently, Rolling Stone (RS) recently published an interview with pop sensation Justin Beiber (JB). In it he states: JB: “I don’t really believe in abortion. It’s like killing a baby?” RS: “How about in cases of rape?” JB: “Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason…” It is this kind of attitude that more or less blames women for being raped – and not necessarily in the “stranger-in-the-bushes-with-a-knife. ..” (Jervis, 165) way, but also in the “Gray Rape” sense. “Gray Rape” as defined by Laura Sessions Step at Cosmopolitan magazine is “sex that falls somewhere between consent and denial [due to] casual hookups, missed signals, and alcohol.” However it’s worded though, rape is rape – whether it’s violent, one party was too intoxicated to say no, or whether one party wasn’t comfortable with setting limits. Rachel Bussel defines consent as encompassing the ways in which we both ask and don’t ask for sex (pg. 43). This definition, in my opinion, is the most accurate. Even if you’re intoxicated, you know if you “asked for it” or not. Unfortunately though, the “well she was asking for it…just
