Drama HW 8 Reading Guide for Ghosts , Acts I-II 1.) Read Act I carefully: what type of books is Mrs. Alving reading that Pastor Manders doesn’t approve of? Pastor Manders doesn’t approve Mrs. Alving to read books of new ideas and of new thinking, ones that present an argument against tradition. Manders is a priest, a representative of tradition, his side is with the old, whilst Mrs. Alvings demand of the new, ideas that will promptly rebel against or overthrow the old. According to what Mrs. Alvings said she learned these new ideas of anti-traditional thinking from what she read. “There is nothing new in these books, nothing but what most people think and believe” (60) “intellectual movements” 2.) If Ibsen is a dramatist who wants to ask questions rather than answer them, identify ONE question that he is asking his audience. There are several excellent options in Acts I and II.
