Fan WU Symbolism Reading Guide Based on your readings, generate a list of five to seven characteristics of Symbolist theatre. Try not to repeat yourself! Include at least one detail from each short piece of the readings. Some options to consider: what does Styan have to say about time and space in symbolism? What about Gerould? Why are Symbolists interested in ancient traditions? How does Vyacheslav want to affect his audience? What did Ibsen’s symbolist plays do? What is the atmosphere of Maeterlink’s symbolist plays? (these are all merely suggestions). Read closely, and create a bullet-point list (if you like) of key qualities. Can exist along with realism, it can eliminate realistic illusion entirely Can pass easily into surrealism and the absurd Evoke feelings and ideas that were greater than those words or actions usually stand for. Ritualistic form of theatre, idealized and mystical in its simplicity and impressionism (Mallarme’s dramatic symbolism) Combination of all arts and revert to the simple elements of drama
