Lindsey Duff GLG 244 – Silkorski Homework #2 PART I: Major Components of the Observatory: o Instrument platform o Underwater System o Above water system o Network Operations Centre (NOC) o Data Management and Archive System (DMAS) Instruments on the Major Components: o Instrument platform SIIM – Scientific Instrument Interface Model Provides physical link between the instruments and the rest of the underwater infrastructure Oil-Filled Hose Connects platform to node to gain power and Ethernet communications Digital Camera System Still images Oxygen Sensor Sediment Trap Sonar Measures ocean currents o Underwater System Instrument Platform Node Houses the systems that control the redistribution of power and communications to all the SIIMs and instruments deployed on the array Fibre Optic Cable o Above water system Fibre Optic Cable Carry data and command signals from node to Shore Station Shore Landing Conduits Protects cable as it transitions from ocean to land Sea water Return Anode Cable Transmits data from Underwater system to Shore Station o Network Operations Centre (NOC) Computer Equipment Oversees the operation of the two shore stations and the underwater platforms Monitors and cables Operators must evaluate the health of the system and be able to detect any faults that arise
