What is Law? Law-a system of rules that governs a particular society Ethics-involves the decisions people make in their personal professional lives Executive and legislative branches make laws-judicial branch interprets Law is hierarchical: laws at the highest level preceed. Federal laws win over state/local.

Sources of Laws Constitutional Law basic legal charters of the federal and state governments, spells out basic legal principles, rights, authorities. In oxford-called charter laws. Statutory law body of law statues and ordinances written and passed by legislative bodies at the federal, state and local levels. Written by city council, state government… Administrative law rules and regulations of government agencies in regulated areas and activities (FCC, FTC, etc.) environmental protection agency. Common Law derives from the accumulation of court rulings over time and is based on English common law. There is no federal common law, since each state has its own judicial traditions. No federal common law, each state has own traditions of society established over time. Law of Equity
