Megan Wauschek AMS205A Kristen Williams April 12, 2011 “American Me” Place and Identity Statement The identity category that I am going to discuss in reference to myself is my gender, feminine. John Money is credited with “the invention of the term gender in 1955 to describe the social enactment of sex roles; he used the term to formalize the distinction between bodily sex (male and female) and social roles (masculinity and femininity)” (Halberstam 116-117) Gender does not describe a person’s chosen or assigned sex category, but how that sex category is socially constructed and performed. The local place, which has helped shape and influence my feminine identity, that I decided to discuss, is the cheerleading gym that I practiced at for all of middle school and high school. My cheerleading gym is a “place” rather than a “space” because of what happened in it. If there were no cheerleaders, mats, trampolines, banners, and uniforms in this gym, it would simply look like a small warehouse. I see this cheerleading gym as a
