Persian Wars begin the Classical Period Darius I decides to conquer Greece after one of the outlying Greek territories controlled by Persia revolts Sparta and Athens, often enemies, join together to fight the Persians 3 major battles: Battle of Marathon in 490, Thermopylae in 480 and Salamis and Plataea in 479, although fighting continues in some areas until 449.
