Jonathan Grant Current Events Folder 9/19/2011 18 Dead in India, Nepal after Magnitude 6.9 Quake This earthquake may not have been of the intensity of the rare quakes on an 8.0- 9.9 scale, but the damage on lives was catastrophic. This earthquake reflects what plate tectonics are all about. The location where this earthquake occurred was on a convergent boundary. This was at the northern border of India between two separate nations; therefore this earthquake was a result of a continental-continental convergence (Ch. 2, pg. 59-60). This event is interesting and makes sense that an earthquake would occur here because at the northern border of India, you have the most prominent mountain range in the world which is the Himalayas. New mountain ranges form whenever there is a continental-continental convergence. As geology would explain, the landscape probably changed in the area as well because tectonic plates rise or fall when there is activity between them.
