Jonathan Grant SPCH 116-003 8/24/09 1. What is paralinguistics? Give an example. Paralinguistics is the use of elements like loudness, rate, pitch, and quality to correspond messages further than words alone. For example, a teacher might use paralinguistics, by raising her voice, so that the class will be aware of the most important information such as tests or projects. 2. Explain the role of voice cycle of communication. The cycle of communication involves the steps of encoding, transferring, decoding, and feedback. Encoding is simply a generation of an idea into language. The language is then transferred by vocalization or enunciation. Once the listener has received the message, he then decodes it by understanding. Feedback is the last step, and it takes place in the form of a verbal or nonverbal response. 3. What role do parents, teachers, and friends play in vocal speech communication? Usually you adapt to the vocal behaviors and tendencies of the certain group that you associate with, whether it be your parents, friends, etc.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
