Beginning Algebra MTH 095 FALL 2011 Moraine Valley Community College Chapter 1.3: Fractions Go ahead and get it out of your system. AAAAAHHHH!!! Fractions! Feel any better? Listen – I know that you hate fractions. It’s okay; you don’t have to like them to get through this stuff. Hopefully, when everything’s done, you won’t be so afraid of them at least. Got it out of your system? Good. Now we can begin! Multiplying Fractions (which is easier than adding them): Sometimes it helps to think about these before just jumping head-first into them. What’s half of a half-dollar? A quarter, right? See – who needs to do this at all? If you can’t see this, an easy way to get an answer (not necessarily reduced – you’ll see what I’m talking about in a second) is to just multiply the tops (denominators) and the bottoms (denominators). And there you have it! See, not bad! One trick is that sometimes you’ll get an answer that’s not simplified . What that means is that the answer can be made smaller. For example, if 4 pieces of pizza are left out of 8, that means half the pizza is left, right? So we can
