Unit 1 Assignment: The Evolution of Private SecurityThe private security sector has changed tremendously over time. Dating back to 1850 when Allan Pinkerton founded the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Due to the expansion of the United States and limited public safety and security, Pinkerton’s main clients included railroad agencies and helping businessmen during the labor strikes of the late 19thand early 20thcenturies. In 1857 Edwin Holmes was credited in purchasing the paten for the alarm and distributing it across major cities such as Boston and New York. In1859 Brinks was created and eventually became the first armored car carrier and protection service for banks, jewelers, mints and retailers. Private security was essential during world war I & II as it was essential that the enemy had limited access to infiltrate and gain access to the “other side.” Private security took a dip as an “essential service” during the great depression, however boosted again due to
